Does performance appraisal work

Does performance appraisal work

In addition to firing an employee, performance appraisal is the task which HR managers dislike the most. This is bound to be as the process of performance appraisal is fundamentally flawed.

The traditional way of performance appraisal

In this process, what the manager does is he writes the  performance of a reporting staff member on a document which is provided by the HR department. In some companies the staff member is asked to fill the review document himself and hand it over to the supervisor.

Most times than not the performance appraisal evolves around the fact on what the manager can remember and this is the most recent of events. It is based on opinions as real time performance management takes time along with follow up to do well. Many managers are uncomfortable in the role of a judge and for this reason in most companies the performance appraisal tends to be due for months. This is despite the fact than annual rises are subject to performance appraisal, managers turn a blind eye towards it. The net result is that a de motivated employee who feels that his manager does not care about him.

It is painful and does not work?

One thing for sure this established process is painful and does not yield the desired results. He is uncomfortable and he is aware that he has to ascertain his judgement with specific facts. In hindsight the staff whose performance is under review becomes a lot defensive.
